What Is the USMC PFT?
The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is a semi-annual fitness assessment required for all active-duty Marines and Marine Corps reservists. The PFT measures overall physical fitness through three events: an upper body exercise, an abdominal exercise, and a cardio event.
1. Pull-ups (or Push-ups) — Max 100 points
2. Crunches (or Plank Hold) — Max 100 points
3. 3-Mile Run — Max 100 points
Max Score: 300 points
1st Class: 235+ | 2nd Class: 200-234 | 3rd Class: 150-199
Scoring Breakdown
Pull-ups (Male): 23 pull-ups = 100 points. Each pull-up below 23 reduces the score proportionally. Minimum 3 pull-ups for Marines.
Crunches: 115 crunches in 2 minutes = 100 points. The plank alternative requires a hold time for equivalent scoring.
3-Mile Run (Male): 18:00 = 100 points. Times over 33:00 = 0 points. Each second adds/removes points proportionally.
PFT Classes
- 1st Class: 235-300 points — Excellent fitness
- 2nd Class: 200-234 points — Good fitness
- 3rd Class: 150-199 points — Minimum passing
- Below 150: Failure — may face administrative action
How to Use
Enter your pull-up count, crunch count, and 3-mile run time. The calculator computes your estimated PFT score and class.
Training Recommendations
To maximize your PFT score: practice pull-ups daily, do core training 3-4 times per week, and run at least 3 times per week with interval training for speed improvement.
