About the LSU GPA System
Louisiana State University uses a standard 4.0 GPA scale with quality points to calculate student GPAs. Your GPA is one of the most important metrics for academic standing, honors eligibility, scholarships, and graduate school applications.
LSU assigns quality points to each letter grade, and your GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points by total credit hours attempted.
LSU Grading Scale
A = 4.0 | B+ = 3.3 | B = 3.0 | C+ = 2.3
C = 2.0 | D+ = 1.3 | D = 1.0 | F = 0.0
Some courses may use plus/minus grades, which provide finer granularity. An A+ also earns 4.0 quality points — there is no grade above 4.0 at LSU.
How to Calculate Your GPA
The GPA calculation follows these steps:
- Multiply each course's quality points by its credit hours to get quality points earned
- Sum all quality points earned across all courses
- Sum all credit hours attempted
- Divide total quality points by total credit hours
Example: If you earned an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course: (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) / (3+4) = 24/7 = 3.43 GPA
LSU Academic Standing Requirements
LSU requires students to maintain certain GPA levels for good academic standing. A cumulative GPA below 2.0 may result in academic probation, and continued low performance can lead to suspension. Dean's List requires a 3.5+ GPA for the semester with at least 15 graded hours.
How to Use This Calculator
Add each course with its letter grade and credit hours. The calculator automatically computes your semester GPA and total quality points as you enter data. You can add up to 10 courses per calculation.
Tips for Improving Your GPA
Focus on high-credit courses since they have the largest impact on your GPA. Utilize LSU tutoring resources, attend professor office hours, and consider grade replacement policies where applicable. Planning your course load strategically can make a significant difference.
