FRAX Score Calculator

Estimate 10-year fracture risk using the FRAX assessment tool for osteoporosis screening.

What Is FRAX?

FRAX (Fracture Risk Assessment Tool) is a diagnostic tool developed by the WHO to evaluate the 10-year probability of bone fracture. It integrates clinical risk factors with or without bone mineral density (BMD) to estimate fracture risk.

FRAX Risk Factors:
• Age • Sex • BMI • Previous fracture
• Parent hip fracture • Smoking • Glucocorticoids
• Rheumatoid arthritis • Secondary osteoporosis
• Alcohol (3+ drinks/day) • Femoral neck BMD (optional)

Interpreting FRAX Results

Treatment thresholds (US guidelines):

  • Major osteoporotic fracture risk ≥ 20% → Consider treatment
  • Hip fracture risk ≥ 3% → Consider treatment
⚠️ Medical Disclaimer: This is a simplified estimate. The official FRAX tool at sheffield.ac.uk uses country-specific epidemiological data. Always consult your healthcare provider.

Who Should Use FRAX

FRAX is recommended for postmenopausal women and men over 50 who have risk factors for osteoporosis but have not yet been diagnosed or treated.

How to Use

Enter your age, sex, BMI, and check applicable risk factors. The calculator provides an estimated 10-year fracture risk.

Fracture Prevention

Maintain adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, engage in weight-bearing exercise, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, and discuss bone density testing with your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

FRAX estimates your 10-year probability of major osteoporotic fracture (spine, hip, forearm, humerus) and hip fracture specifically.
US guidelines suggest treatment when major fracture risk is ≥20% or hip fracture risk is ≥3%.
No, FRAX can be calculated with or without BMD. Adding femoral neck BMD improves accuracy.
Postmenopausal women and men over 50 with osteoporosis risk factors who haven't been diagnosed or treated.
This is a simplified version. The official FRAX tool uses country-specific fracture data for more precise estimates.
Yes — adequate calcium, vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, fall prevention, and avoiding smoking/excessive alcohol all reduce risk.
