What Is FRAX?
FRAX (Fracture Risk Assessment Tool) is a diagnostic tool developed by the WHO to evaluate the 10-year probability of bone fracture. It integrates clinical risk factors with or without bone mineral density (BMD) to estimate fracture risk.
• Age • Sex • BMI • Previous fracture
• Parent hip fracture • Smoking • Glucocorticoids
• Rheumatoid arthritis • Secondary osteoporosis
• Alcohol (3+ drinks/day) • Femoral neck BMD (optional)
Interpreting FRAX Results
Treatment thresholds (US guidelines):
- Major osteoporotic fracture risk ≥ 20% → Consider treatment
- Hip fracture risk ≥ 3% → Consider treatment
Who Should Use FRAX
FRAX is recommended for postmenopausal women and men over 50 who have risk factors for osteoporosis but have not yet been diagnosed or treated.
How to Use
Enter your age, sex, BMI, and check applicable risk factors. The calculator provides an estimated 10-year fracture risk.
Fracture Prevention
Maintain adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, engage in weight-bearing exercise, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, and discuss bone density testing with your doctor.
