Carpet Calculator Guide
Planning a carpet installation starts with accurate measurements. Carpet is typically sold by the square yard or square foot, and knowing exactly how much you need prevents costly waste or shortages.
Square Feet = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Square Yards = Square Feet ÷ 9
Total Cost = Square Yards × Price per Sq Yard
How to Measure
Measure each room at its widest and longest points. For irregularly shaped rooms, divide into rectangles and measure each section. Always round up to the nearest foot.
Standard Carpet Widths
Most carpet comes in 12-foot or 15-foot wide rolls. The calculator accounts for seaming when rooms exceed these widths. Seam placement affects appearance and durability.
Average Carpet Costs
- Budget: $1-3/sq ft (polyester)
- Mid-range: $3-7/sq ft (nylon)
- Premium: $7-15/sq ft (wool)
- Installation: $1-3/sq ft labor
- Padding: $0.30-0.75/sq ft
How to Use
Enter the room dimensions and price per square yard. The calculator instantly shows total area, square yards needed (with 10% waste factor), and estimated cost.
Installation Tips
Order 10% extra for waste and pattern matching. Remove old flooring before measuring. Check subfloor condition. Choose quality padding for comfort and carpet longevity.
